The Bayside STEM ACADEMY is the home of a special district program for Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) middle school students.
The GATE program at STEM Academy is a cluster model, where a significant cadre of gifted students travel with each other throughout the day to most of their classes.
The GATE students participate in a common core class for Language Arts and Social Studies, along with other high-performing students. In 2012-13, there are over 30 GATE identified 6th graders, who are split among two core classes with those other high-performers.
For mathematics, the students are placed in a math class based upon their performance on an entry test. In 2012-13, most began with Pre-Algebra in a cluster of GATE students. Some 6th grade GATE students are taking 6th Grade math. A very small number of very high performers have in the past placed into Algebra in 6th grade, though the school district is currently rejecting all such placements.
For science and STEM classes, GATE students are also clustered in smaller groups according to their schedules, often along with other high performing students.
Most teachers of GATE students have had extensive training in multiple strategies for gifted learners as well as in design thinking from the Stanford University d-School.
GATE parents organize special activities such as field trips, and the school holds monthly meetings of GATE parents, for more information, visit www.baysidestem.com/gatemeetings
